CKCA Art Teacher Receives $990 KAEA Grant for Student Printmaking Program
GREAT BEND, Kan. — Students at Central Kansas Christian Academy will soon have the opportunity to explore a new form of art after CKCA art teacher Miraya Starnes received a $990.87 Project Grant from the Kansas Art Education Association (KAEA).
Starnes applied for the grant to purchase materials for a printmaking unit at CKCA. The funding allowed the school to purchase block-printing tools, carving blocks, brayers, printing ink, printmaking paper and other equipment students will use to learn the process of creating original block prints.
During the unit, students will be introduced to the printmaking process from beginning to end. They will create their own designs, transfer and carve those designs into printing blocks, apply ink with brayers and produce finished prints on specialty paper.
The hands-on project will give CKCA students an opportunity to work with materials and techniques that extend beyond more traditional classroom art projects. Starnes is excited to introduce the process to her students and give them another way to develop their creativity and artistic skills.
The KAEA Project Grant program helps art educators obtain materials and equipment for student-centered visual arts instruction when classroom and school budgets may not be able to cover the full cost of specialized resources.
For Central Kansas Christian Academy, a Christian private nonprofit school serving students in Great Bend and the surrounding area, opportunities such as the KAEA Project Grant can make a significant difference. Grant funding allows teachers to expand educational opportunities for students while helping the school be thoughtful with the resources entrusted to it.
The $990.87 award provides CKCA with materials that can be used to introduce students to printmaking and strengthen the school's growing visual arts program.
CKCA is grateful to the Kansas Art Education Association for investing in art education and providing teachers like Starnes with opportunities to bring new experiences into their classrooms.
Most importantly, the grant will put new tools directly into the hands of CKCA students—giving them the opportunity to learn, create and experience an art form they may not otherwise have encountered in the classroom.
